Biography of President Jack Eng

Updated March 2012

Jack Eng was the President of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA) of New York from 2010 to 2012, a position that is traditionally referred to as the "Mayor of Chinatown". He began his two year term of office on March 1, 2010.

Jack Eng originally immigrated to New York City from the Toishan County of Canton, China. He was graduated from the City University of New York and began his career as a professional accountant. He subsequently served as President of the Chinatown Republican Party, and as President and advisor of the Hip Sing Association and Eng Suey Sun Association of the U.S.A. He also served as a Commissioner of Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission (OCAC) of the Republic of China, and is currently a senior advisor of the OCAC. He served as President of the Hoy Sun Ning Yung Association of New York before assuming the presidency of the CCBA.

The CCBA is a very significant organization among the overseas Chinese communities worldwide. The CCBA President is elected by its General Assembly from among two candidates nominated by the Hoy Sun Ning Yung Association and the Lin Sing Association. The term is for two years and the President's position alternates between candidates from the Hoy Sun Ning Yung Association and the Lin Sing Association. Jack Eng was elected as President in 2010 as the nominee of the Hoy Sun Ning Yung Association.

Since taking office as President of the CCBA, Jack Eng had continued in the footsteps of his predecessors to ensure the excellent services of CCBA to New York’s Chinese-American community. In addition, he had devoted a great deal of time and effort to renovating the Chinese Community Center, where the headquarters of CCBA is located, and the New York Chinese School. It now provides an upgraded, better facility for handling and servicing the orgaization’s varied activities in Chinatown.

The year 2011 had been an especially busy one for Jack Eng and the CCBA since it marks the centennial anniversary of the Republic of China and the 125th birthday of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the father of the Republic of China. Jack Eng and the CCBA have hosted a number of different events celebrating this remarkable occasion for the Chinese-American communities in New York. The CCBA and other community organizations in Chinatown, along with the Republic of China, were responsible for planning and erecting a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen in Chinatown. The statue was unveiled in an elaborate ceremony attended by city and state officials in Chinatown’s Columbus Park on November 12, 2011, which marked the 125th birthday of Dr. Sun.
